Shop makes sweet gesture

A JUNIOR football team tasted sweet success when a donation from a Redditch shop.

Volunteer coach Dave Banks founded Maypole United under-7s during the summer but needed a regular place to train and kit for his players.

Fortunately Michelle Smallwood, owner of the Candy Cave in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, stepped in after learning about the side through social media. She agreed to sponsor the team, providing a full strip for the side, while the extra money has secured an indoor and outdoor training venue. The players are also entitled to free treats from the store.

Mr Banks said: “I tried the bigger companies around Birmingham but none of them were interested and then Michelle approached me.

“It means I can spend more time with the team rather than calling off sessions.”
