HUMOUR helped get across a serious message and raise more than £500 for the mayor’s charities.

The Ship of Fools comedy night at the Palace Theatre on Tuesday (September 9) was organised by Coun Pat Witherspoon in aid of the Redditch Mental Health Action Group and the Redditch Friends Together dementia group.

Compère Ant Hill, who runs the regular Stand Upstairs shows in the Room Upstairs, took to the stage as well as five comedians, with a raffle including the first prize of a spin in a Porsche at Silverstone.

Coun Witherspoon said: “It was a very successful event which was a lot of fun to raise money and awareness for the charities.”

MHAG vice-chair Rebecca Blake added: “I’d like to thank mayor Pat Witherspoon for bringing people together for a superb night of laughter for the benefit of people living with either mental health problems or dementia.

“The comedians brought everyone a lot of joy and the whole evening helped to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health.

“MHAG is extremely grateful to be one of the mayor’s charities and we will make sure the funds help local people who are battling with their mental health every day.”

The next Stand Upstairs event will start at 7.45pm on Friday (September 19), with tickets costing £7.75 available from www.redditchpalacetheatre.co.uk or by calling 01527 65203.
