Safe and Sound classes in the pipeline for Redditch following bumper Lottery grant

A SERIES of ‘Safe and Sound’ workshops for disabled people in Redditch is to be rolled – thanks to a grant from the National Lottery.

In a first for the borough, the Birmingham-based Disability Resource Centre is to run courses for the diabled helping them to combat hate crime, learn self defence and feel safer in their community.

It’s all thanks to an £8,342 grant from the Lottery and the centre’s Steve Moralee, himself from Redditch, hopes the money will help raise the organisation’s profile in the town.

“We’ve been going for 25 years but few people know about us until they really need us,” he said.

“We’ve run these courses successfully in Birmingham but never in Redditch, so this is a really big opportunity for us.

“It’s difficult to get figures on disability hate crime but it’s still a really big issue. Disabled people are in society and they need to feel safe.”

The money will help pay for two six week courses for 15 to 20 people.

“It’s come at a good time for us as we’ve also been awarded a £5,000 grant from Redditch Borough Council to help disabled people improve their helath and well being.

Other beneficiaries from this latest round of Lottery grants are Mental Health Action Group Redditch, which was awarded £10,000 to run new counselling services, and a further £10,000 for Webheath Academy Primary School towards their Dolphin Nest play area – an outdoor space for children with special needs.
