A WOMAN who is battling breast cancer for the second time has praised routine scans for spotting the disease.
Angie Wood, who runs Astwood Bakery, was diagnosed with the disease in October last year following a breast screening.
The 54-year-old, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy, said the scans were life-savers for spotting the disease in its early stages.
“I had breast cancer 17 years ago and it was only when I went for the routine scan they picked it up,” she said.
“I think they are so important for women, it means treatment can start straight away and they can keep check of people who have had it before.
“It can be uncomfortable but it is worth it.”
The Mayfields resident has since undergone a mastectomy and to say thank you to nurses at the Alexandra Hospital for her continued care she has raised more than £2,000 by dying her hair pink and then shaving it off.
The money will go towards the nurses and the garden suite at the hospital which is where she has her chemotherapy.
“Without them I don’t what I would have done. They are fantastic and the care is just wonderful. I also want to thank everyone who has come into the bakery and friends and family for their donations and support. They really don’t know what it means to me.”
