Rotarians delight in the exploits of a nuclear submarine skipper

Redditch Editorial 19th Mar, 2022   0

MEMBERS and guests of the Rotary Club of Redditch celebrated the arrival of spring with their annual Spring Lunch at The Abbey Hotel.

The meal was followed by a fascinating talk from guest speaker Rear Admiral Roger Lane-Nott, about his long career as a submarine commander in the Royal Navy.

Now retired, Roger served in conventional submarines during the early part of his naval career, appointed commanding officer of HMS Walrus in 1974.

As skipper of HMS Splendid, a nuclear powered submarine, Roger saw action in the Falklands conflict and in the first Gulf War.

A self-confessed ‘Cold war warrior’ perhaps the most interesting anecdotes related to interactions with the Soviet navy, during and immediately after the Cold War – especially topical in the light of recent events.
