Ribbon cut on new flats on site of derelict Redditch medical centre

THE ribbon has been ribbon cut on new luxury apartments built on the site of the former medical centre on Tanhouse Lane in Church Hill.

The development, known as The Old Surgery in a nod to the previous use of the site, provides 20 executive-style apartments on the previously derelict site.

Ward Councillor Mike Rouse described it as ‘on the up’ as he officially declared the complex open with Doctor John Cochrane who was one of the GPs at the medical centre.

“The site ran into a number of issues when Church Hill Centre was redeveloped, resulting in a derelict building for years, which was starting to attract anti-social and drug issues,” said Coun Rouse.

“I was elected in 2018 on a clear pledge to unlock the issue for Church Hill, and although I could never claim credit for the awesome and inspiring work of Ian Young and his team as the developer, I am pleased to have played my part behind the scenes.”

Ian Young added: “This site came with some very complicated legal issues that needed to be unpicked before any work could start, and then the pandemic struck, followed by rising material costs, but we have managed to overcome them to deliver a high-quality housing scheme that will benefit the area and local economy.

“I have ensured a very high quality of finish, and everything is done to modern standards such as the all-electric boilers and car charging points. These apartments will provide comfortable homes in an up-and-coming part of Redditch.”

The flats are marketed at the executive level, which is the first time such a project has been delivered in Church Hill.

“If you stand in Church Hill Centre you will see plenty of social housing plus the council is building new homes in Edgeworth Close for rent, all of which is important and welcome, but it is also important to provide private rental options too as part of a vibrant mix,” said Coun Rouse.
