Residents slam rubbish service as refuse builds up in town flats

RESIDENTS in Evesham Mews say Redditch Borough Council has ignored their pleas to unblock the bin chutes on the development.

They say one chute has been blocked for two years now and while another was unblocked by the council around five months ago but was re-blocked shortly after – and has remained that way ever since.

Separate wheelie bins are collected every Thursday, but these fill up quickly resulting in some residents putting rubbish on communal landings, including black bags full of food waste.

This has subsequently attracted rats and maggots with some people putting salt outside of their homes to prevent them from entering.

One Evesham Mews resident said: “These aren’t conditions that anyone should have to live in.

“I have tried to contact the council so many times including three times last week but we very rarely get through to them, and when we do our complaints don’t get followed up on.

“We are concerned about the mess on the balconies, especially as the weather is beginning to get warmer, before long the smell will be unbearable.”

Residents also say the landings aren’t cleaned often enough and one of the main doors to enter the block of flats no longer locks, meaning anyone can get into the complex.

A council spokesperson said: “The council is set to engage with residents about the imminent installation of an upgraded waste and recycling storage system.

“We have recognised the chute hasn’t been fit for purpose for the last few years and have asked residents to use the storage currently provided on the car parks and not to dump bags on the balconies, which, while more convenient, isn’t pleasant for the other residents.

“The installation of the new system will happen in the next few weeks and is part of the council’s multi-million pound investment in its housing stock as part of its ongoing programme of works.”
