Residents outrage at proposed planning application for 'toxic' metal facility

RESIDENTS in Moons Moat claim the town is being used as a ‘dumping ground’ following an application for a metal processing plant 100 metres from their road.

The factory, Kaug Refinery Services, is based at Green Street, Deritend, Birmingham and wants to relocate to 10 Merse Road, Redditch which is currently an industrial use building.

The company recovers precious metals from byproducts, they also buy waste from Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

Residents of the housing estate next to the proposed site on an industrial park say if the planning application is passed it will set a precedent for other companies wanting to move out of the Birmingham Clean Air Zone.

David Shaw has lived in Hilmorton Close for over 40 years, and said he is sick of Redditch becoming a dumping ground.

“It was bad enough with the new amazon factory being built, then housing estates popping up everywhere.

“My concern pollution, I live about 100 metres from the industrial estate and god knows what will be being pumped into the air.

“Noise has never been an issue before, but this factory will be operating from 6am until 10pm during overtime.”

At a meeting last week, Coun Matt Dormer portfolio holder for planning and leader of Redditch Borough Council said he would be supporting the residents.

“We will do everything we can to assist the residents with their concerns.

“No matter what happens, we will make sure that all rules and regulations are adhered to.”

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council, said: “Officers are now considering the comments that were made on the application following the end of the consultation period. ”

“A report with recommendations will then be considered by Members of the Planning and Regulatory Committee in a public meeting ahead of a decision being made.

“It is not currently known which Committee Meeting this application will be considered.

“Once the meeting date is confirmed, the agenda will be published on the County Council website.”

In the planning document, Kaug Refinery Services have said the noise and environmental impacts are minimal.

“The majority of operations will be undertaken inside the building and will not be significant in terms of the context of the location as the area is heavily industrial.

“Potential impacts from NOx emissions, SO2 emissions and acid deposition has been considered and the demonstrated impacts will be negligible in this regard.”
