REDDITCH’S HMV store has escaped closure after the retailer was bought out of administration by Sunrise Records.

Staff at the Walford Walk store in the Kingfisher Centre faced an anxious wait after it was announced 27 of the music chain’s unprofitable stores would close immediately resulting in 455 redundancies.

But the Redditch store is not among the casualties unlike high profile outlets at Merry Hill, Bluewater and Westfield London and the retailer’s first ever shop on Oxford Street in London.

Sam Jones, who works for HMV in Redditch, said: “It was a massive relief when we received the news via email this morning.

“It’s been a tough few months of discussions but hopefully we can look forward to the future now.”

Canadian company Sunrise Records will now take on HMV’s remaining 100 stores, safeguarding almost 1,500 jobs.

HMV’s administrator KPMG will retain a further 122 employees at warehouse functions to assist in winding down operations.
