Redditch stands united to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

Redditch Editorial 27th Jan, 2021   0

TODAY, January 27, is Holocaust Memorial Day, a day when across the world people come together to remember the persecution of Jews and others deemed undesirable by the Nazi regime in the Second World War.

It has since come to symbolise the slaughter of people in other genocides too, and Redditch, as always adhering to this year’s theme, to shine a Light in the Darkness by highlighting the day, even in these pandemic times.

A video with a wealth of contributors has been pulled together by a dedicated team here in the town for all to view.

“The various community groups have been so generous, creative and supportive and we hope this piece of work can be used again and again as an educational resource in years to come,” said one of the organisers Boon Yeng.

Local MP Rachel Maclean said: “Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. I remember the six million Jewish men, women and children who were murdered, all victims of Nazi persecution.

“It’s an important opportunity for Redditch and the country to reflect on the tragic events of the Holocaust and of subsequent genocides.

“Let’s stand together against prejudice, hostility, and division in the world today.”
