Redditch school's tribute to the fallen

Redditch Editorial 12th Nov, 2017   0

STUDENTS at a Redditch school have been working together to create a huge poppy installation to mark Remembrance Day.

Children at Birchensale Middle School combined Remembrance Day with an art project with each of the 520 students making a paper poppy printed with the poems ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae and ‘The Soldier’ by Rupert Brooke.

Poppy kits were also sent home so parents could join in with the activity too.

The school will be holding a special Remembrance Assembly and the flowers will be displayed in school, taking inspiration from the poppy installation at The Tower of London in 2014.

Elaine Bowles, head of art and design, said: “This was an opportunity to teach the whole school about the meaning of Remembrance Sunday.

“Every pupil who made a paper poppy dedicated it to one of our fallen heroes from the first World War, some who were only teenagers themselves.

“Not only did pupils join in with this crafty activity but they took time to think about their soldier: What was he like? Where did he live? Was he brave?

“We are delighted with our finished tribute to our local men who died 100 years ago.”
