TALKS on how Redditch can benefit from the Birmingham 2022 Common Wealth Games took place at the Abbey Stadium last week.

Redditch MP Rachel Maclean met with the chief executive of the 2022 Birmingham Organising Committee, Ian Reid, to start early discussions.

Mrs Maclean said: “We’re only just scratching the surface and nothing is certain at this point but it’s a very exciting time for Redditch.

“I had a really productive meeting with Mr Reid and we both feel the town will benefit massively in 2022.”

The pair discussed ways to boost Redditch’s skills development, employment opportunities and how to engage its schools and businesses.

“There will be a huge number of people coming to Birmingham and its surrounding area,” said Mr Reid, “So we need to look at how to attract those people to visit or stay in Redditch.

“The town is perfectly placed for people visiting the second city and it’s likely hotels – for example – in Redditch will see a real boost.

“It’s also great to see a real desire from Mrs Maclean to start planning early and I look forward to continuing our dialogue in the near future.”

Leader of the council Matt Dormer added: “It’s important to get ahead and plan as early as possible.

“This will be a great opportunity for Redditch.”
