THERE’S nothing quite like getting stuck into a new book, and Redditch Library has just received £1,000 worth of them after winning a global reading challenge.

The library recently won the community group/library category of the 200 million minutes challenge, organised by educational group Achievement for All.

The challenge aimed for 200 million minutes to be read between World Book Day in March this year and Children’s Book Day in April.

In its first year of taking part, Redditch bookworms, up against libraries around the world, clocked up 13,438 minutes, topping their category.

Now it has received its prize of £1,000 worth of books in celebration for their efforts, courtesy of Pearson Education.

Lisa Church from Achievement for All said: “We are a charity that champions reading the cause of closing the education gap.

“Reading is quite a major factor in helping social mobility; those who struggle to read struggle to get through their GCSEs and to go on and get a good job.

“What Redditch Library has done is a fantastic achievement – well done to everyone.”
