Redditch jewellery shop to close down after 37 years this month

A FAMILY-run jewellery shop in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre will close down after 37 years this month if it can’t find a buyer.

Independent shop ‘James The Jewellers’, based on George Walk, has been serving Redditch people since 1982.

Owner Steve Rea said: “I’m really sad it will close on September 30, but I turn 70-years-old next year and I feel now is the best time to retire.

“I’ve put the shop on the market because I would really love someone to take over and continue the business but we’ve had no offers so far.

“I think we’re one of the longest standing jewellers in Redditch, which makes me very proud.”

Steve runs the shop with his wife Petra, 65, after she sold her jewellery shop in Birmingham five years ago.

She said: “We’ve made some fantastic friends over the years – friends who started off as customers.

“I will miss all the people who just pop into our shop for a chat. They become a part of your life.”

James The Jewellers, named after Steve’s middle name ‘James’, offers a wide range of jewellery, new fittings and also repairs.

Staff member Rosemary Shorter, has worked at the business for more than 25 years.

Now 59, she said: “Although I’m losing my job, it’s okay, because we’re coming to the end of a natural working cycle.

“I will remain friends with Steve and Petra.

“In the meantime I will have a break before looking for new work sometime after Christmas.”

The business is expected to sell all of its new jewellery at discounted prices before it closes its doors for good.
