REDDITCH GPs are reminding patients at risk of complications from flu that now is the time to plan ahead and organise getting their free flu jab.
One in three people are eligible for a flu jab and it’s important that as many as possible protect themselves and others by getting vaccinated.
Doctors say that for most healthy people, flu is an unpleasant but usually self-limiting disease with recovery generally within a week.
However theer are people at greater risk from flu including:
n People aged over 65
n People with a serious medical condition, such as a heart complaint, lung disease such as asthma, liver disease or have suffered a stroke
n Pregnant women
n Young children
Dr Richard Davies, chair for NHS Redditch and Bromsgrove clinical commissioning group said: “My Practice, The Ridgeway Surgery held its first flu clinic last Saturday.
“Tessa Hawkes from our Practice Participation Group attended to show how patients can get involved and improve the services they use,” said Dr Davies.
“On the day more than 270 patients were immunised and 18 potential new PPG members were signed up.
“The simple message for anyone at risk in Worcestershire is take action now and protect yourself against flu. I always have the flu jab to keep myself well and to protect my family and patients.
“Flu is not just a bad cold. It can increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses, especially for the elderly and those with long term or chronic conditions. In the worst cases, flu can result in a hospital stay, and it can even kill.”
The needle-free nasal vaccination is also available as an alternative way for parents to have at risk children vaccinated.
To book a flu jab, contact your GP or a participating pharmacy to arrange an appointment.
