A DEVOTED Redditch couple have reached a milestone wedding anniversary after spotting each other across the dance floor more than 60 years ago.

Michael and Sheila Russell, of Harport Road, celebrated their diamond milestone on Saturday (April 2) with friends and family, including their two daughters and son, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren, who surprised them with enlarged giant copies of their wedding photos.

The 83-year-old couple met in 1953 when they were introduced by Michael’s sister at a local dance and married three years later at Mount Carmel Church on Beoley Road.

Michael had originally traveled over from Ireland in search of work and instead found the woman who would become the love of his life just after both their 21st birthdays.

“I remember him joking when we met saying it was good timing because he didn’t have to buy me a birthday present,” said Sheila, who used to work at the Alexandra Hospital.

“We had a lovely party on Saturday and we will be taking cakes to the seniors club where we are members,” she added.

“I still meet the people I used to work with at the shop in the hospital every week so I will take them cakes as well.

“It seem to be going on forever so I will be glad when it all goes back to normal.”
