DELIGHTED organisers says nominations are rolling in for the Redditch Celebration of Women awards 2018.
Designed to mark the centenary of women getting the vote, the aim is to celebrate the considerable achievements of women in the town.
This could be in recognitition of captains of industry or commerce, or women who have made their mark in politics, or any other walk of life.
Women who are making a difference today to the lives of others and who are worthy of shouting about.
“It’s going really well,” said Laney Walsh, branch secretary of Unison who is behind the event.
“As well as nominations we’ve had cases of women nominating themselves and coming across as almost apologetic in doing so.
“No woman should not have to apologise for nominating themselves.
“This is a celebration of the achievement of women and it’s about being free to do so openly and for each other.”
There are five awards: The Business Achievement Award; the Culture and Environment Achievement Award; Lifetime Achievement Award; The Everywoman Award for the unsung women of the town; and the Young Person’s Achievement Award celebrating the youth of the town.
The event will culminate in a glittering evening at St Stephen’s Church on Thursday, May 24.
“We have a four keynote speakers for the event, former MPs Jacqui Smith and Karen Lumley, Alison Davies, a curate at St Stephen’s who took a major career change, and Heather Wakefield, Unison national officer for local government who is coming up from London to speak.”
n Nominations have to be in by May 7 and forms can be picked up from Redditch Town Hall and from the offices of the Redditch Standard next door to Lloyds Bank.
If you prefer, simply write down on an email or piece of paper why someone is being nominated and send your entry to either of the about offices or email it to RedditchWomen@gmail.com.
