Redditch campaigner takes pension fight to capital

A DETERMINED Redditch woman is continuing her fight against State pension changes that have left women born in the 1950s thousands of pounds worse off.

Judy Phillips, from Church Hill, joined hundreds of women from around the country on Tuesday (February 20) as they marched on Westminster to meet MPs.

She said: “We want to highlight the plight of women born in the 1950s and to ask our MPs to support us and help persuade the government that the increase in State Pension Age for women born in the 1950s was unfairly implemented.

“It has not provided any real support to women who are left with literally nothing –who have used their life savings, who have empty cupboards, and who are having to choose between eating and heating.”

Judy is a member of the WASPI Voice group – separate from WASPI Ltd – and who are looking to talk with MPs and work out a system whereby women can draw their pensions early if they need to.

Sixty year-old Judy said: “Thousands of women born in the 1950s are now having to wait longer for their pensions.

“It’s not right that some women cannot afford to buy even basics. Many are forced to visit foodbanks to feed themselves.

I think it’s disgusting that women are having to march on Parliament to get what should be theirs already.”

The group, made up of several pension campaign groups including WASPI Voice, 50s WAG, Bees Knees and ‘We Paid In You Pay Out’, marched from Waterloo Bridge to the House of Commons with banners, whistles and placards.

Those ladies unable to attend were invited to send letters and emails to parliament voicing their concerns – with more than a thousand being delivered on the day of the protest.
