Redditch barbers on the up thanks to close connection to Birmingham City FC

A LADS barber shop in Redditch has gone from strength to strength since opening five years ago, in part thanks to a close connection to Birmingham City FC.

It all started when former City footballer, Jonathan Grounds, asked the owner of Chaps Barbers, Dan Nurthen, to cut his hair on Christmas Eve.

After doing an exceptional job, Dan was introduced to the rest of the squad.

Since then, Dan has gone on to cut most of the team’s hair including the manager, owner and club chairman.

“The key to building up a business is being reliable, consistent and always saying yes,” said Dan who, despite his clientele, is actually an Aston Villa fan.

“The club did a Q&A with the goalkeeper a while ago and one of the questions he was asked was ‘where did he get his haircut’.

“After mentioning Chaps Barbers load of blues fans started following me on Instagram.”

But Dan says he enjoys hanging out with players from the rival club as he has built up a rapport.

When asked if the Mount Pleasant barbers has been affected by lockdown, Dan said it’s just enabled him to spend more time with his family.

“I had twins last year so I’ve really enjoyed having time with them.

“And my amazing customers have been really supportive by booking in as soon as I opened back up.”

Chaps Barbers offers complimentary beers to customers while having their hair cut.

Sky Sports is often on the TV in the background and before social distancing was introduced customers were even allowed to play table tennis.

“I try to make it fun,” added Dan.

“I used to play FIFA and offer double or nothing on haircuts but I’ve stopped doing that as I haven’t played in a while.”
