Redditch adventurer Taz to complete her toughest challenge yet

Redditch Editorial 14th Sep, 2019   0

SHE’S climbed to Everest base camp, leapt out of aeroplanes and now Redditch adventurer Taz Habib has shrugged off the onset of pneumonia to complete her toughest challenge yet – trekking in the Gilgit Baltistan region, home to the ‘killer mountain’ Nanga Parbat, in Pakistan.

It’s all been done for a good cause too, raising money for former top cricketer and now Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Cancer Appeal which provides free cancer treatment to underprivileged patients.

However, the highlight of the trip wasn’t the adventure itself but a visit to one of the hospitals specialising in cancer care in Lahore, the capital of Pakistan.

“There was widespread media attention about this trip,” said Taz, a former headgirl at Bridley Moor School, who now works on developing cancer drugs for pharmaceutical giant Roche.

“This was a real heart-wrenching visit to see first hand the sick patients who have travelled from miles away to get access to treatment, and the hardship and pain we went through to complete the challenge is nothing to what these patients have to go through on a daily basis.”

Taz endured a fair amount of suffering herself though – the trek topped out at Rush Peak at 5,098m – and on her return to Dubai was diagnosed with pneumonia.

“Not all team members made Nanga Parbat and Rush Peak due to exhaustion, illness or altitude sickness,” she said.

“And treking over glaciers was incredible but yet so dangerous.

“There were a number of falls by team members, thankfully saved by our porters, who at times put their own lives at risk to save the trekker.”

The team, which was joined by England cricketer Adil Rashid’s father Abdul, were doing it all for the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal.

Every penny raised by Taz goes to the charity. Visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tasneemkillermountainrushpeak for more.
