Rachel Maclean: A mandate to make good on the promises made

The Rachel Maclean MP column

“THANK you to everyone who voted in last week’s local elections and ensured their voice was heard. Local democracy matters.

I’d like to pay tribute to all the candidates who put themselves forward to stand for election. It’s not easy to put your hat in the ring and stand. Whether you won or lost, you should be proud that you stuck your head above the parapet.

Undoubtedly the results have given the Conservative Party locally a huge mandate to make good on the promises made to voters – and I’ve no doubt they will.

But nationally we’re delivering too. It was the State Opening of Parliament on Tuesday and it will be a busy parliamentary session as 30 new laws were announced in the Queen’s Speech.

Speaking to voters during the local election campaign it’s clear they want to see their politicians delivering on promises made.

As we focus on the nation’s recovery from Covid-19, we will give the NHS the tools it needs to bring down waiting times and deliver the care people need.

The Government will pass the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill which will ensure we can cut crime, support our police and build confidence in our criminal justice system. And the UK will build back greener by acting on climate change, hosting the vital COP26 climate negotiations and by implementing the Environment Bill.

The message is clear. Both locally and nationally, the politicians you elected are continuing to deliver for Redditch.”
