THIS weekend Redditch residents are encouraged to join in the celebrations as the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay arrives in Redditch’s Arrow Valley Country Park on Saturday July 23.

At 8am the baton will make it’s way around Redditch’s BMX track, with members of Redditch Premiers BMX Club racing alongside the official Baton bearer, Steve Rooke.

Steve is the founder of Redditch Wheels Project Skatepark and helped develop Redditch BMX Track.

He was selected by the Queens Baton Relay after a nomination to carry the baton around the BMX Track riding alongside BMX club riders as part of its journey to Birmingham 2022.

He said: “It was a real surprise to be nominated as there are so many other deserving candidates.

“I will carry the Baton with pride representing our community and BMX on this historic moment for Redditch.”

Then at 8.15 the baton will leave for Arrow Valley Lake on a vintage Project Origin motor bicycle, while the BMX club will continue into a celebratory open morning for visitors to enjoy.

From 8.20am two more Baton bearers including Redditch Borough nominee Lauren Mernagh of Redditch Positivity Rocks will run along Arrow Valley Lake, before the Redditch leg of the globetrotting relay concludes at a celebratory event at the Arrow Valley Visitor Centre and Positivity Rocks installation.

The baton will make its way to Bromsgrove at 9:20.

Redditch Borough Council’s portfolio holder for leisure, Coun Jo Beecham, said: “It’s an honour to welcome the relay to Redditch, with events set for both ends of the route it will be our pleasure to welcome everyone to take part in the build up to this global event that’s right on our doorstep.”

Leader of the Council, Coun Matt Dormer, said: “It was our honour to nominate Lauren to be one of the Queen’s Batonbearers. She brought so much to the town during lockdown with Redditch Positivity Rocks that so spontaneously brought the community together. I look forward to cheering her and the other Batonbearers on.”

Lauren Mernagh said: “I am really excited to be taking part, I still can’t believe it. I never imagined Positivity Rocks would lead to anything like this. Now my friends and family will be turning out to cheer me on!”
