Plenty of satisfied customers as Redditch Repair Cafe returns

Redditch Editorial 6th Jul, 2021   0

REDDITCH Repair Cafe is back – and there were plenty of satisfied customers with three vacuum cleaners, two bikes a hi-fi, sewing machine and much more successfully repaired.

They even managed to patch up my jeans, writes Standard editor Ross Crawford, no mean feat given the size of the tear in them!

Organiser Clare Beckhelling said inevitably some things could not be fixed but with a success rate of more than 50 per cent, and other items just awaiting spare parts or to be taken home and repaired, they were delight to be back.

“It’s been great to be here and the public seemed delighted to have us back,” she said.

“We’ve sewn buttons on shorts, repaired two clocks, an amplifier and more.

“One lady brought in a musical teapot which had a broken lid.

“Her husband had bought it for her many years ago and she’d rediscovered it after he’d sadly past away so it’s of great sentimental value.

“One of the repairers will be taking that home to put it right.”

The Repair Cafe concept was initially launched in Malvern and some years ago had spread to Redditch too, but with the pandemic it had been hit by the subsequent lockdowns.

Repairs are carried out for free, but donations are always welcome to keep everything going for next time.

“Many people said they were glad to fins us,” said Clare.

“It’s a great concept and we’d like to thank everyone for their generous donations.”

Based at Community House in Easemore Road, Redditch Repair Cafe is held on the last Saturday of every month from 10am to 2pm and will next be open on Saturday, July 31.

Depending on how the easing of lockdown goes it is hoped the cafe itself, selling tea, coffee, treats and more, will be open too for visitors.
