One-way no way for Mount Pleasant parking issue

Redditch Editorial 28th Nov, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

PLANS to introduce a one-way system in the Mount Pleasant area of Evesham Street to ease parking problems for local residents have been as good as shelved.

County Councillor Graham Vickery (Lab, Redditch North) said officers had been out to look at the area and come away convinced it would be unworkable.

Now the intention is to ease the parking restrictions in Evesham Street and Ludlow Road with the aim of eventually introducing parking permits for residents.

“We will be looking to create more space for people to park in, which we will monitor, and then we can look at how many residents parking permits will be required,” said Coun Vickery.

He added that he was aware that it could make the area more of a target for shoppers and commuters looking to avoid paying parking fees, but said that residents would also gain.

“The first stage will be to free up the space then we will see how many permits are needed,” he added.

Local campaigner Carrie Gibbs, who along with other residents has faced thousands of pounds in fines for parking outside their own homes, said something had to be done urgently.

“We’ve been fighting this for nine months and it’s almost as if we’re going backwards,” said the mum of three.

“Nothing has been done and now people have wind that at the end of Mount Pleasant you do not get ticketed and they take a chance and park there – commuters and shoppers.

“It means when I go out on the school run I’ll have nowhere to park when I get back. People are waiting for you to go in the morning and as soon as you move they take your parking place.”
