'NHS staff saved my life' - COPD patient heap praise on the Alex

A MAN has praised staff at Redditch’s Alexandra Hospital for saving his life after he was rushed in with COPD complications.

Sean Finney, who has had the condition for the last ten years, fell ill last Monday and had a video consultation with his GP.

When his condition deteriorated on Wednesday evening he had to call 999 and was taken into A&E.

Mr Finney, from Webheath, said: “This was the first time I had been hospitalised and without the paramedics and the staff at the Alex I would not be here now.

“In my whole life I have never seen a group of people work so hard.

“Bearing in mind the current crisis, the amount of work I saw going on was absolutely incredible.

“The Alexandra has had some bad press but I cannot fault it – I want to thank everyone who helped me – from the paramedics to the A&E staff, those working on Ward 1 and everyone in the NHS.

“I had the impression from talking to people that the public don’t rate the Alex but I want to reassure them the hospital and the care I received was second to none.”

He added there was a lack of personal protection equipment and that was something which needed addressing but, from what he could see, that was no-one’s fault during this unprecedented time.

Vicky Morris, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust’s chief nurse, said: “We are receiving regular supplies of protective equipment, and using that equipment in line with national guidance, to make sure our patients, staff, agency workers, volunteers and other colleagues are protected and can stay safe.”
