New ‘1-2-3’ waste and recycling collection system heads to Alcester and Studley

A NEW ‘1-2-3’ waste and recycling collection system is coming to Alcester and Studley as Stratford and Warwick District Councils push ahead with plans to create a new ‘super district’.

The new system will see food waste collected weekly, recyclables every two weeks and general waste that cannot be recycled every three weeks.

The plans were revealed at a special briefing last week led by Councillor Tony Jefferson, Leader of Stratford District Council and Coun Andrew Day, Leader of Warwick Borough Council.

They said both authorities were now working towards 2022 when their waste contract is up for renewal.

This will be followed in 2023 by local elections which could see the map of local representation redrawn if plans for the super district are far enough advanced.

Coun Jefferson said the two authorities ‘had a lot in common’ and that ‘getting the democracy right’ was a key issue and would ultimately come down to a local government review.

However they said the move would be of huge benefit to residents if the two authorities became one.

“It will need to be thought through carefully as to how and when and we will need to get the services in place,” he said.

“A super district will have to be approved by the Secretary of State and it will have implications for every ward, boundaries and councillors.”

The new waste collection system will be the first sign for residents of growing ties between the two authorities.

‘1-2-3’ is being driven by Julie Lewis, the head of neighbourhood services for the two councils, who introduced a similar system at Daventry District Council to wide acclaim in 2018.

She said the move would not only lead to greater recycling but also cut down on waste collection vehicles on the road, reduce mileage drive and cut CO2 emissions which was good for the environment.
