Names on Studley War memorial remembered in centenary tribute

Redditch Editorial 7th Jun, 2020   0

A NEW book marking the sacrifices of those whose names appear on the war memorial in Studley has just been published.

Written by former resident Arthur Cooke with help from Joy Pegrum and Karen Cording, it tells the tale of the memorial which is 100 years old this year.

Called ‘In celebration of Studley War Memorial Centenary 2020; a tribute to the 110 who gave their lives in WWI and WWII’ it’s a well-illustrated volume and comes just a month after the VE Day celebrations.

“Within these pages will be found many more details about those remembered upon it thanks to Arthur’s research,” said Karen, from Studley Local History Society.

“For 100 years the memorial has been the primary focus of Studley’s Remembrance Day service.

“Unfounded rumours in the 1980s of its removal to another site aroused alarm across the village but common sense prevailed.

“However, the size of its ‘footprint’ was reduced to allow for new homes on the site of the old Victorian vicarage, but it remains firmly on its original site – a constant reminder of the debt owed to those who gave their lives in two World Wars to all those who pass by.

“The new book pays due tribute to the people of Studley and its outlying neighbours,” said Karen.

“It traces the history of the memorial and details that arise from it as well as the British Legion roll call, followed by a cameo for each of the people named on it, their places of rest or remembrance and the units to which they belonged.”

The book is available for collection from Karen Cording in Redditch at £5 per copy or by post at £6.50 each.

Copies are also available from Dave Smith, chairman of Studley Royal British Legion.
