The woman, who didn’t want to be named, showed the Standard a picture of the man allegedly involved in the incident at the Abbey Trading Centre supermarket.

She said: “This disgusting person took off his mask to cough at me because I was not wearing one.”

Police have since confirmed they are investigating the alleged incident.

Inspector Lee Page said: “I can confirm we are investigating a report of public order offence committed at Sainsbury’s in Redditch at 12.45pm on September 16.

“This investigation is ongoing.”

Witnesses are being encouraged to come forward. They can do so by calling police on 101, quoting crime reference number 00307_1_17092020.
