Make a play date with writing fun

Redditch Editorial 13th Mar, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016

A FORMER Children’s Laureate is leading the search to find the next generation of aspiring authors, with the help of Redditch youngsters.

Michael Rosen has teamed up with the New Tardebigge Wacky Warehouse on Hewell Lane to find young wordsmiths aged four to ten.

The We’re Going on a Bear Hunt author wants to raise the profile of child literacy following World Book Day (March 5) and is urging young writers to let their imagination run wild to create their own tales.

Mr Rosen said: “I’ve always been keen to encourage children to explore their thoughts and ideas, and really enjoy their imagination.

“The best thing about working with Wacky Warehouse is it demonstrates reading and writing doesn’t just have to be confined to the classroom and that there is a whole world of possibilities out there for kids to have fun and be creative with books.”

As well as selecting the best stories, Mr Rosen will bring the winning Wacky Wordsmith tales to life at a special reading for the three winners.

Three winning stories will be published in a Wacky Warehouse official story book, which will be available in all 81 play centres.

Rebecca Bettam, general manager at the New Tardebigge, said: “We can’t wait to see what the next generation of Rosens and Rowlings come up with and to share them with thousands of kids up and down the country.”

To submit stories families need to complete an activity sheet in Wacky Warehouse play centres or Fayre & Square pubs, or ask a parent to complete the application form at before Sunday, March 22.
