Labour pledge to fill potholes

REBECCA Blake and Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary visited Birchfield Road on Monday evening as part of the party’s pledge to crack down on potholes.

The road, which has a number of potholes, is said to be one of the worst in the town and causes particular problems for cyclists.

Labour’s parliamentary candidate said the topic of potholes tended to come up on doorsteps when she is talking to residents.

“I’m often told Redditch roads are the worst in the county, we are crying out for better maintained roads and I want to know why Redditch doesn’t get its fair share from the County Council,” she said.

“We report potholes and we’re told they are not deep enough to be repaired, yet vehicles and cycles are suffering damage thanks to the state of our roads.”

A lot of the holes are ‘patched’ up, or filled, as a short term solution but Mrs Blake said that often the tarmac comes straight out of the pothole it was intended to fill.

She said: “Simply filling holes like on Birchfield Road is a waste of money because as soon as it is filled the pothole returns.

“It’s throwing good money after bad.”

Labour have pledged to fix ‘Pothole Britain’.

Michael Dugher, Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary, said: “Hard-pressed road users have quite rightly had enough of having their vehicles and bikes damaged because of Britain’s pothole crisis.”
