JUNIOR Captain of Redditch Golf Club and Redditch Standard paper-boy, Mackenzie Butler, has raised money with his friends by completing a 72-hole golf-challenge in just under 10 hours.
Mackenzie, aged 15, along with golf team-mates Sam Ellis, 16 and Jake Bourne, 18, have so far raised £1,336 for the Royal British Legion after bettering their initial target of £1,000.
Mackenzie said: “The golf was so much fun. Me and the boys really gave it our all. It was a challenge but after seeing all the money we’ve raised you realise it’s all been worth it.”
Mackenzie decided to raise money for the Royal British Legion – which undertakes work to support members and veterans of the British Armed Forces and their families – after a trip to Belgium.
Mackenzie said: “I visited the war graves in Ypres as part of a middle-school trip. I laid a poppy on the grave of a fallen relative who gave his life during WW1.
“It felt personal because I lost family members in the war. I decided from there that I wanted to raise money for the Royal British Legion. It is also a poignant year for commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the end of WW1.”
Mackenzie said he will continue to raise money throughout the year, with an overall target of £2,000 by November.
