'It's like Blackpool Illuminations' - anger at Studley Castle lighting

“IT looks like the Blackpool Illuminations” – that was the comment on the new Warners hotel at Studley Castle after parish councillors considered complaints about the amount of night time light pollution from the £50million complex.

It came from Coun Matt Fox after parish chair Coun Sue Redman had raised the issue of asking Stratford District Council if Warners had stuck to their planning conditions.

“The lighting is very prominent and we should ask if the right conditions are being met for the lighting and outside appearance of the building,” she said.

Councillors were particularly concerned about a new bedroom block built at the hotel.

“Looking at the front of the property I noticed there are a number of air condition units at the front of the building on the new part of the roof and I cannot remember them being in the planning documents I saw,” said Coun Adrian Smith.

“We have concerns about the look of the landscape to mitigate the impact of the new build bedroom block as viewed from across the open countryside.”

Councillors also agreed there should be a screen across the front of the building to reduce its visual impact and noted that a footpath – a Public Right of Way re-routed by Warners – had not be restored to its original line as in the plans.

Members agreed to ask the planning inspector if Warners had met all their conditions.
