ALCESTER has a new Mayor in Councillor Kathryn Cargill, and in landing the top job she’s keeping something of a family tradition going.
Her husband Mark, who is also a town, district and county councillor, was Mayor in 2013 and his mother was the town council’s first Mayor while his father was chairman of the previous Alcester local authority.
Kathryn said: “We did have a little chuckle as it never occurred to me when I first joined the council that I would become Mayor of my adopted town, although I’ve now lived here for a long time now.”
Reflecting on the year ahead, she said: “The last 12 months have been difficult but our residents have really pulled together and that wonderful support is going to be prominent as we move forward.
“The physical and mental health of local people and the strength of our businesses have been hit but we will work to improve these.
“We have a very active town council and certainly on the business front activities like Totally Locally Alcester will help.”
The town council is paying the upfront costs for the first year of businesses joining the initiative and so far 36 have already signed up.
