Hughes Electrical charity cyclists stop at Redditch store during 450-mile bike ride

A GROUP of colleagues from Hughes Electrical stopped off at the firm’s Redditch store on Wednesday morning as part of their 450-mile charity bike ride from Preston.

They were welcomed into Hughes Electricals’ Redditch branch by store manager Dave Arkinstall and sales manager Dave Bridgewater before they set back off.

They then traveled on to Luton among other stops with their final destination being Lowestoft, home of the firm’s most Easterly branch where Hughes first began over 100 years ago.

The charity bike ride is to raise funds for the Benjamin Foundation, which recently become Hughes Electricals’ official partner.

The foundation supports children, young people and their families in Norfolk and Suffolk, helping them overcome challenges in their lives.

A total of 180 young people are accommodated every night, meaning the charity helps to provide over 50,000 safe nights’ sleep each year.

The ultimate aim is to give young people associated with the Benjamin Foundation work experience in Hughes Electrical stores.

The group has raised an incredible £15,000 so far, smashing their initial target of £5000.

Nigel Jeavons, the senior salesperson at the Hughes Electrical store in Hunstanton, came up with the idea of the charity ride.

He has taken part in fund-raising events in the past including a 500-mile bike ride for Hughes Electrical in 2016.

The idea was conceived last August and the team has been taking part in their own individual training routines since February.

Hughes Electrical’s Chris Thornton, who is one of the cycling team, said: “It’s fantastic to be taking part in a ride that will raise money for a fabulous cause.

“It has gone really well up to this point but hopefully the rest of the ride won’t be too tough.

“Thankfully the rain hasn’t started so far so fingers crossed that the rain continues to shine on us.”
