HOSPITAL staff at the Alex and Worcestershire Royal Hospitals have been praised for doing a ‘magnificent job’ by their chief executive Matthew Hopkins.

His comments followed news that more than 440 patients treated at the hospitals suffering from coronavirus had successfully returned home.

The announcement, has brought a clamour of approval as a sign of good news even as the first wave of the Covid-19 begins to subside.

Mr Hopkins, himself a former nurse, said: “Our staff across all our hospitals and health and care services in Worcestershire are doing a magnificent job in working to put patients first through one of the most challenging periods in the history of the NHS.

“This includes frontline staff working under tremendous pressure looking after coronavirus patients and also those working tirelessly behind the scenes to support them.

“We are delighted that these patients could be safely discharged home. This is a huge morale boost for our staff who are working day in day out to provide the best possible care for our patients.”

“It is important that local people do everything they can to reduce the pressure on our hospitals by following the latest social distancing guidance and maintaining scrupulous hand hygiene.”

The Office of National Statistics says there were 37,375 deaths involving Covid-19 registered up to May 8 – consisting of 21,145 men and 16,230 women.

Most of those deaths have been among those aged 65 and over 33,098 out of 37,375.
