Four point plan shows way forward for staff at Redditch's Alex Hospital

STAFF at the Alexandra Hospital are to benefit from an ambitious programme to transform workplace culture and build a more positive, supportive working environment.

The 4ward culture programme will run across all of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust hospitals.

Running for three years it’s aim is to enable, encourage and empower staff to play an active part in driving continuous improvements to care quality.

The programme, which will apply to all 6,000 staff at the Trust, uses proven culture change techniques and is built around establishing four ‘signature behaviours’ for staff at all levels.

These are:

Do what we say we will do

No delays, every day

We listen, we learn, we lead

Work together, celebrate together

Hundreds of staff have already been introduced to the aims of 4ward and dozens of those have signed up to be advocates to help raise awareness and understanding of the programme.

Cearann Reen, 4ward advocate and Ward 10 Manager at Alexandra Hospital, said: “I am an advocate because I’m passionate about the job I do and care about the Trust I work in.

“As a leader of a team I like to think that we can look after each other so we can deliver the best care possible to our patients.”

The Trust’s chairman, Caragh Merrick and chief executive, Michelle McKay met staff at all three sites during a series of launch events today (Friday 6 October).

“Building a more positive culture across our Trust is an essential part of the work we are doing to transform this organisation,” said Mrs Merrick.

“It’s often said in the NHS that our staff are our greatest asset and our commitment to the 4ward programme show how committed we are to supporting our people and helping them to deliver the highest possible standards of patient care.”

Mrs McKay added: “We face some big challenges, including delivery of our wide-ranging quality improvement programme, improving the flow for patients who attend our Emergency Departments, our preparations for winter and our efforts to achieve financial stability.

“Making the Trust a better place for our patients, our staff and our local community is the ultimate goal of 4ward. That will help to make this the high performing Trust that I know we can be.”
