For Pattie: Shelley's tribute to much-loved Redditch councillor

A SPECIAL garden, complete with memorial bench, has been opened in Winyates in honour of dedicated local councillor Pattie Hill, who passed away late last year.

The garden is at Winyates Craft Centre and the bench was donated by Shelley Millward of nearby Magicakes as a tribute to the hardworking councillor who was also a good friend.

There to officially ‘open’ the bench were Pattie’s husband Graham Lailey and her former work colleague and friend Pat Witherspoon who also served Redditch as a Labour borough councillor.

The bench forms the centrepiece of a ‘Chat Stop’ set up by Shelley as a place for people to stop and have a natter and find a moment of peace and quiet.

There’s also tea, coffee and cake available, should they want some.

“It’s from me to Pattie, and people can come along to the garden and sit on the bench, they don’t need buy anything, and just have a catch up.”

Pattie, who served Redditch as a Labour councillor at both County Hall and the Town Hall, died on Boxing Day 2020 after she lost her courageous battle against cancer.

A former Police Officer with West Midlands Police, she became an expert in child employment law.

Among a host of achievements she worked with TV investigative reporter Roger Cook, and helped frame the terms and conditions of the young stars of the Harry Potter films.

She was also an advisor to the government on child employment law.

She continued her life of public service as an officer with Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and took her passion for helping those in need to her role as Borough Councillor for Batchley and Brockhill and County Councillor for Arrow Valley West.

She also volunteered for Macmillan Cancer Support at the Alex.
