Firefighters in Worcestershire help spearhead new motorcycle safety campaign

FIREFIGHTERS in Worcestershire are helping spearhead a motorcycle safety campaign this week.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service are promoting ‘Think Bike Week’ which is aimed at motorcyclists across the country.

It aims to highlight bike safety and the importance of maintenance work and wearing the proper riding gear.

The campaign, which started on April 23 and finishes May 3, sees riders encouraged to brush up on their driving skills.

The fire service said between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2020 there were 285 crashes involving motorcycles.

Sadly, there were 12 fatalities over that time period and 71 people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

One-hundred and twenty-two people were taken to hospital with slight injuries and 23 people were given first aid at the scene.

Tony Crook, lead for road safety at The National Fire Chiefs Council which is also supporting the campaign, said: “Motorcyclists are over-represented in collision and casualty statistics nationally.

“With increasing numbers of people taking to two wheels, our aim is to encourage riders to do all they can to stay safe.

“This campaign at the beginning of the motorcycling season is a great opportunity for all partners to deliver a range of safety messages across the UK.”

Other organisations involved include the National Police Chiefs Council, the Motorcycle Industry Association, Trading Standards England, Highways England, the National Young Riders Forum and more.
