Christmas wish will come true for Redditch's Ruth as she tells her story on the small screen

REDDITCH grandma Ruth Sullivan is getting set to spend Christmas with her granddaughter – for the first time in almost 16 years.

In September, social media – and a bit of good luck – helped reunite Ruth Sullivan with her long-lost granddaughter, Shannon, who she hadn’t seen since she was three weeks old.

Shannon, who initiated the search, had scant information to go on – that her grandma’s name was Ruth, that she had one son, and that she lived in the Droitwich area.

After searching Facebook for everyone who matched these details, she finally found the right Ruth, in Redditch.

Shannon introduced herself and explained she was looking to find her maternal grandmother.

Delighted, Ruth replied and the pair are now getting to know eachother and making up for lost time.

This Christmas will be extra special for the pair, as they will get to share the festive season with eachother, with a few memorable surprises sprinkled into the mix too.

Ruth, who lives in Winyates Green, said: “My son and I are estranged. I met Shannon when she was just three weeks old, and never saw her again.

“She’s almost 16 now – and I’ve really enjoyed shopping for some special Christmas gifts for her at last.”

After the Standard shared their story, Ruth and Shannon will be appearing on television as part of ITV Central News’ ‘Togetherness show’, which will air this Friday (December 22) at 6pm.

The pair will be meeting up at Studley Cricket Club, the place they first met, to share some of their stories and hopes for the future.
