THERE were cheers for The Vaynor First School after it triumphed at the Redditch Quicksticks Hockey District competition.

Held at Redditch Hockey Club, 15 teams of children from Years 3 and 4 took part in the 4-a-side competition with The Vaynor Team 1 overcoming Batchley in the final to claim the gold medal.

They then took this form into the Worcestershire School Winter Games at Bromsgrove School where they played five matches, winning three and drawing two to clinch gold again and crowned county School Games Quicksticks Hockey Champions 2019.

“Matches were highly competitive and played in the right spirit. It was just fantastic to see so many children enjoying playing hockey,” said PE co-ordinator Dawn Duggan.

Meanwhile at the District Cross Country Finals at Birchensale Middle School The Vaynor’s Jack Morris emerged from a field of 72 boys to claim the gold medal.

And the day had a silver line for The Vaynor with Emilia Fletcher finishing second in the girls race, one of the school’s three girls in the top five.
