Carnival build-up starts this Saturday with Xtreme Mas in the Kingfisher!

THE organisers of Redditch Carnival 2019 are on the lookout for 40 big hearted folk to get into the carnival spirit at a special event in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre this Saturday, September 21.

With the re-born carnival just over a week away, the award-winning Leicester Caribbean Dance troupe ‘Xtreme Mas’ are going to be in town, in the shop unit opposite Clintons Cards.

And they’ll be looking for volunteers to get into the carnival spirit, learn the dance moves and get fitted out with costumes so they can join in the event itself on the big day.

“We’re appealing for 40 people to come on down, have a bit of fun and get kitted out for the carnival,” said Amanda Haden, chair of the carnival committee.

Not only that but Xtreme Mas will also put on a show in Milward Square outside Coffee No1 so visitors can get a flavour of what’s to come on Carnival Day, September 28.

Not only that but throughout the day Redditch Local History Society will be running cine footage of Redditch Carnivals from yesteryear.

“I remember everyone used to prepare costumes for the carnival – I was in it twice myself, once as a majorette and once with my nursery,” said Amanda.

“And the carnival is a big family thing too and we really need the people of Redditch to get behind this year’s event.

“What we’ve planned, with the help of Tommy Wilson and his funfair and the Caribbean dancers, is something Redditch has never experienced before, and it is going to be truly spectacular.”

Redditch Carnival was last held in the Year 2000 and although this year’s event will be on foot, leaving from Edwards Street car park, hopes are high that if enough people support it, the floats will return next year.

“We need to thank Redditch Borough Council for all their support, and it starts this Saturday, opposite Clintons Cards – please come down and be part of it,” said Amanda.
