Big hearted shoppers donate 600kg of items to Redditch Food Bank

BIG hearted shoppers donated a massive 600kg of desperately needed provisions when Redditch Food Bank held a collection at Asda on Saturday, May 18.

Food bank manager Laura Kyte said that not only had people been very generous but crucially they’d donated much of what they were short of.

“We’re really pleased. We had more than a few gaps in our shelves but shoppers read our leaflets, realised what we were short of and responded by going out and finding it,” she said.

Essentially these were meals in a tin like spaghetti bolognese and ravioli as well as tinned fruit, long life milk and rice puddings and custard.

The summer months can be difficult for hard-up families as during the holidays children will be missing out on school breakfast clubs and dinners.

“It’s a tough time and there are quite a few charities and holiday clubs that step in to help but it can still be trying for families,” said Laura.

“We expect to be as busy if not more so during the summer but at the same time we also try to be as generous as we can to help people out.”

The next food bank supermarket collection day is at Tesco on Coldfield Drive on Saturday, June 22.

Volunteers will be handing out leaflets to shoppers listing those items the charity is short of and asking people to buy one or two of them.

Residents can also drop off food at a number of food bank deposit bins including those at both Tesco and Asda as well as at The Space in Winyates Centre and St Stephen’s Church in the town centre.
