THERE are many ways that people can get more active and one of the best forms of exercise is walking, writes Dr Richard Davies.

This is the perfect time of year to get out and about and the ‘Active 10’ campaign encourages and supports people to include more exercise into their life, with a daily brisk ten-minute walk.

Research shows that people are less active nowadays; with many adults now spending more than seven hours a day sitting down and often people feel they’re too busy to get the recommended amount of exercise that they need.

Whether you’re walking to work, stepping out at lunchtime, walking to the shops or taking the dog out, there are a lot of ways to fit ten minutes brisk walking into your daily routine.

There are many ways to stay fit, like visiting the gym, cycling, swimming and running, but walking counts too and it’s a great form of exercise to get the heart pumping faster.

It can also make you feel better and improve your mood.

Staying in good condition has a number of health benefits and can help combat conditions like heart disease, lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes and cut the chance of having a stroke.

Physical activity can also boost energy levels and sleep quality and reduce the risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

If this sounds like something you’d like to get involved in, you can download the free ‘Active 10’ app to support you.

The app gives more information about walking, the health benefits of physical activity, hints and tips to get you started.
