REMARKABLE Redditch runner Dr Doug Richards has been chosen as a baton bearer for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this summer.
Doug, who’s run all over the world and raised lots for good causes in the process, said he heard the news via email after being nominated by a fellow Redditch runner.
“I think they had more than 8,000 nominations and they whittled it down to 2,222 and I was lucky enough to be chosen,” said Doug, a published author.
“Of course I’m absolutely delighted – it’s a huge honour.”
Doug is a regular runner at Arrow Valley parkrun and a run leader and mental health champion for England Athletics, is one of the few people in the world who has run at least a half marathon on all seven continents of the globe before their 70th birthday.
However the Winyates Green resident doubts he’ll be going quite as far as a baton bearer.
“The baton is currently going around the Commonwealth and I think it’s due here in June,” he said.
“It will then tour the country before it gets to the West Midlands.
“I think the distance I’ll be taking it will be relatively short, but my turn comes on July 20.”
