THE Astwood Bank Carnival committee are buzzing after Redditch MP Rachel Maclean asked a question in the House of Commons on Thursday and highlighted the upcoming Carnival.

On the subject of highlighting the great community events that happen in the UK, Mrs Maclean asked Tourism Minister Michael Ellis: “If you were to attend the Astwood Bank carnival on July 14, you would see the sport of Viking fighting and horseman stunts being contested on the field.

“This brings in 5,000 people from all over Worcestershire.

“Does the Minister agree with me that these local events are very important for our communities? “Will he congratulate the organisers, and what more will he do to ensure their success?”

Mr Ellis duly agreed with Mrs Maclean and offered his congratulations although he admitted he could not attend all such events up and down the country.

Colin Bates from the Carnival committee said: “I know we always like to get the word out about the Carnival but this wasn’t a route we  had in our marketing communications plan this year, but we’re all absolutely delighted.”

Speaking afterwards, Mrs Maclean said: “With just a few weeks to go until this year’s Astwood Bank Carnival ?, which attracts thousands of residents and visitors to Redditch, I asked the Tourism Minister if he agrees with me about how important these events are in bringing communities together.

“I can’t wait to go!”
