REDDITCH town centre is set to lose another high street staple as Argos will not be renewing its lease in the Kingfisher Centre.

The store will be closing its doors on January 20 in a ‘disappointing but not unexpected’ decision.

A spokesperson for Kingfisher Shopping Centre, said: “Following the merger between Sainsbury’s and Home Retail Group, Argos is reviewing and consolidating its store portfolio nationally and has notified us it will not be renewing its lease at the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.

“Negotiations with Argos have been ongoing for some time and whilst disappointing this news it is not unexpected in context with the group’s property strategy. We are already in discussions with a number of retailers interested in opening at the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.”

Sainsbury’s acquired Home Retail Group, which owns Argos and Habitat in September 2016 and as part of the £1.4bn takeover. The group plans to put 250 Argos outlets into Sainsbury’s stores over the next three years.

The Argos store at the Abbey Retail Park, close to Sainsbury’s supermarket, is not thought to be affected.
