All wrapped up! School achieves ambition tree wrapping for Jubilee

BATCHLEY First School achieved its ambition of wrapping its oak tree in time for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Since February this year families, staff, governors and friends of the school have succeeded in knitting and crocheting more 1,000 five inch squares.

The children in Year 4 helped to sew the squares into a length which was wrapped around the trunk of the tree on the morning of Wednesday, May 25.

The children then enjoyed a Jubilee-themed lunch which involved the kitchen staff in producing some amazing cakes.

In the afternoon well over a hundred parents, grandparents, carers and friends gathered on the field as part of the school community to admire the tree and to watch each class perform for its Jubilee celebration.

Art work was displayed and there was lots of singing, country and maypole dancing before everyone stood together to sing the National Anthem.

Fund raising stalls including a raffle, tombolas, cakes and a ‘Guess the name of the Corgi’ game completed a great school celebration for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The head teacher, Mrs Sarah Downes said: ‘The celebration for the Jubilee really was a fantastic afternoon with a lovely buzz of excitement from families around the field. Everyone was just amazing. The children demonstrated a variety of talents. I was so proud of everyone and I am sure that the parents were also incredibly proud.’
