Alcester Singers Young Musician competition proves to be close battle

Redditch Editorial 9th Dec, 2019   0

THE annual Alcester Singers Young Musician competition took place on November 22 and what a closely fought battle it proved to be.

There were six entrants this year who performed their own selection of music to a panel of three judges, with each competitor allowed seven minutes to perform.

The audience was treated to pieces on the guitar, flute, voice and piano by the talented youngsters.

Up for grabs was £200 in prize money plus an attractive trophy and the judges found themselves with a difficult decision to make.

After some deliberation the nod went to pianist Jack Middleton who played Sonata in D minor by Soler and Across the Stars by John Williams from the Star Wars films.

The judges also used their discretion to award a runner-up prize on £50 to Orla Reid who played the Theme from Schindlers List, also by John Williams, on violin.

The Alcester Singers will be inviting both Jack and Orla to perform at their summer concert with the choir and other past Young Musician winners.

The competition is an annual event held each November and is supported by the Howarth Memorial Fund.
