Alcester community joins family to remember Joshua

THE FAMILY of Joshua Hillstead joined members of the Alcester community to mourn his loss at a vigil last Saturday evening at St Nicholas’ Church.

The eight-year-old tragically lost his life after getting into difficulties in the River Arrow on July 22.

Despite being cared for by emergency services at the scene he died the following evening surrounded by loved ones at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Around 120 people attended St Nicholas’ Church on July 27 for a tribute led by Rev Katie Cross in which candles were lit and a prayer and a poem were shared.

Members of the public were also able to write messages of condolence in a book for his mum mother Becky Hinde, dad Carl Hillstead and stepmother Emma Hillstead who were all present.

Rev Cross said: “The outpouring of support has shown just how heartbroken our community is as people have gathered here to grieve, pray and offer their condolences to Joshua’s family during this distressing time. It was well attended and deeply appreciated by the family.”

She added that clergy had offered comfort and prayer to members of the community who had come to the minister over the past few days.

Billy Hutt, the headteacher at The Coppice Primary School, Hollywood, where Joshua attended paid tribute to the ‘popular’ and ‘well thought of’ pupil.

“Joshua had a beautiful smile. He had a strong friendship group and his relationships with them were based on kindness and enthusiasm for life.

“Joshua had an ability to connect with others and, as a result, he would always contribute positively to group situations and was always willing to lend a helping hand to any of his friends when they required it. This is why he was so popular and well thought of.

“The loss of Joshua has left a hole in our school community which we will never be able to fill and we now need to concentrate on ensuring that we support Joshua’s family and siblings in every way we can.”

An oak tree alongside the River Arrow on Jubilee Fields – near to where the tragedy happened – has become a poignant place to remember the youngster.

Bunches of flowers, balloons and notes have been left by members of the public at a point where the water runs particularly deep.

The spot is alongside a footpath in a recreation ground popular with families and dog walkers.

Last week Joshua’s stepmother called on social media for a greater awareness of the dangers of the river in that area.

The Alcester Police Safer Neighbourhood Team has appealed for the public to stay out of the water after seeing very young children and adults in the River Avon at Bidford during patrols.

It said the public was ignoring water safety rules and putting themselves in danger.

See Royal Life Saving Society UK website for information on water safety and where a free booklet can be downloaded.
