A TOTAL of £35million has been invested into building affordable housing on Edward Street and Britten Street in Redditch.
The new venture by Green Square Accord hopes to develop a neighbourhood which was initially full of abandoned buildings and turn them into apartments and townhouses.
Carl Taylor, the assistant director of Green Square Accord, said: “We wanted to transform what was two fairly abandoned streets and bring life back into the town centre.”
He also hopes the investment will bring more cash into the area and improve businesses and services.
Mr Taylor added building the houses would lead to the construction workers spending cash with Redditch businesses and using the town’s services.
Then when the new tenants move in, because the houses are energy efficient, the residents would have more spare funds to use in the borough’s shops and the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.
The abandoned buildings being changed include the Charm Building, Victoria Works, Clive Works and the Trades and Labour building.
Half the new homes will be rented and the other half owned.
Opposite the site is an apartment block built by Green Square Accord, the first almost plastic-free building in Europe.
The buildings are scheduled to be completed by 2026.
